DIY Tips: What Type Of Thread Should I Use To Make A Chan Luu Bracelet? Polyester Thread Cotton Thread Silk Thread Natural Oxblood Leather cord

NYMO? POLYESTER? COTTON? SILK? WHICH THREAD DO YOU PREFER?

Hi guys!

We would like to let you know that if you are planning on buying the same kind of Chan Luu style buttons and faceted nuggets that we purchased to create our DIY Chan Luu style leather wrap bracelet tutorials, the supplier has created a special discount coupon code for readers of ice cream when the sky is grey!

We have also just posted our reviews on the Chan Luu style buttons and faceted nuggets.

I'm sure if you have been googling around to find out more about how to make your own Chan Luu bracelet, you should have noticed that the most common choice of thread is Nymo, a non-twisted fibre filament. Nymo thread is ideal for stringing craft projects and creating wearable beaded jewellery.

But if you want a more rustic look for your DIY Chan Luu bracelets, Nymo looks way too plasticky and smooth, too "glossy".

Also, Nymo thread is very thin. If you are thinking of making a Chan Luu bracelet with Nymo thread, the threads will not have the depth of feel against the leather cord, even if you are threading with 4 Nymo threads. It ends up looking flat.

So I've decided to do a comparison with a few types of sewing thread you can commonly get hold of. Namely, polyester, 100% cotton and 100% silk.

DIY Tips: What Type Of Thread Should I Use To Make A Chan Luu Bracelet? Polyester Thread Cotton Thread Silk Thread Natural Oxblood Leather cord

As you can see from the picture above:

  • Polyester has the cleanest/ neatest look, with cotton being the most messy looking due to the fraying of thread.
  • Silk has a nice sheen to it, whereas polyester and cotton have a more "glossy" look.
  • In terms of thickness, silk thread is the thickest, with cotton being the thinnest.
  • All of the threads are twined, which adds to the rustic feel.
  • Pricing wise, silk thread costs the most, at SGD12.95. Polyester and cotton are cheaper, at SGD4.95.
"I prefer the look and thickness of the silk thread compared to the rest. What about you? I hope you'll find these tips helpful!"
Love, Karen

    1. Thanks for the compliment ^^ we're glad the tips are helpful. Unless it's the visual part that bugs you, otherwise, nymo is pretty hardy against wear and tear.
